Iammortal: I have lots of things to do in my life. So why do we have these? We've got LOTS of other things to distract us...what is the point of having these myths?
They needed stories becasue they didnt know how things came to be (like nature for example). Im not sure if we have myths like the Greeks but we do have Santa Claus,The Easter Bunny
i think that they had myths of gods and godesses because they want to be rememebered forever. i say we do have a myth of our own culture for example like obama because he was the first black president.
Minos--I see what you saying about him being someone people look up to and someone who certainly has made history. But the Gods and Goddesses were not real. He is real.
@Ms. Hughes: well sometimes people get bored of doing things sometimes they just want to relax and tell stories... and these myths have been going on for years so they still continue til this day.. also like you said ancient greece came up with many things we still use today and myths so happens to be one if those things
maybe greeks are religious people as well because you need a good story that start off with a person who has a beginning and but no end to draw people attention. yeah myths like jack and the beam stalk or little old lady who live in a shoe. i think those are myths. some people might argue that this a myth Jesus being real or not that conversation goes both was. Are there any othr myths?
Ohhhh...Ariadne, so you mean that the Greeks felt powerful because of all they created? But these gods and goddesses were just another of their inventions. You bring up a great point: Why, if they have so much power and were such amazing inventors did they create stories about people more powerful than them?
The reason that they needed these stories for the future gods and goddesses would listen to there mistakes. Many families do have myths. For many people they show there culture in different ways.
You know im guessing greece was sort of unbalanced they did these stories so they can feel that there was some type of power over them i guess they got tired of simply living however they wanted with no structure i believe they was strong enough to think like that!
I think they need story because they had nothing better to do. They needed these "Myths" to have some thing to do. Think about it they didnt have t.v's,radios&cell phones like we do today. Yes i feel that we do have "Myths" in are culture today such as UFO'S,ghost ect. but if you think about it all these "Myths" where told years ago before we were born.
@Ms.Hughes:they did that because they wanted people like us today to read about them and they was probably in the state of mind sayin people might not care about what we build or what we made,so they came up with people that were more inportant than them in will get more attention than them
thats right there is candy man, bloody mary, Resurretion mary that happened in chicago, voice of dead people that you are suppost to hear at night at the water tower after the chicago fire burn the city down (only at night).
Poseidon, good point. This is their religion. The bible is filled with stories that if you are not religious you might view as myths--most societies have a myth of creation.
well i guess myths were used to give some things its meanings for example in the movie troy or 300 the man was telling a myth so he can prep them up for war
They needed the myths to know the history and life of the Gds and Godesses that come before them. For example when in the movie 300, the man in the beginng was telling the story of Leonidous (the king) and how at the age of seven started the process of him becoming a man. And also when Leonidous was sent into the mountains as a sort of survival test and he killed a huge wolf (this showed his bravery). In conclusion, there are most certainly myths in our culture. For example, here in chicago in the 90's when the movie "Candyman"(a made up serial killer) came out people actually started to believe that if you stood in the mirror and said Candyman three time that he would appear. From my understanding, he never actually appeared. Therefore, this was just a made up myth...
Ah, Ms.Wanderer1, EXCELLENT. Myths do serve some sort of purpose. So far you guys have told me that they 1. Help us to understand things that we dont know about 2. Get us inspired.
i dont know.maybe to let everyone know why things happen today

ReplyDeleteim thinking maybe they started this just to have some control in their lives
they needed stories because they had nothing else to do in acient greece and yes we do have some myths in our culture today..
ReplyDeletesuch as bigfoot, the lochness monster, ghost, UFOs etc...
Mswanderer: Wow great point. Tell me more. How did they not have control in their lives?
ReplyDeletei think to keep people in control and scared like we had the lochness monster were people tried to keep others out of a lake, or forest like big foot

ReplyDeleteAh, Achilles--so these stories are to help us to learn what to do and not to do? Or are they just to scare us? Do they serve any purpose?

ReplyDelete@Ms.Hughes:they were the first to creat mostly everything which gave them the power to be in control of their lives in so call goddess over the others
ReplyDeleteMinos--I see what you saying about him being someone people look up to and someone who certainly has made history. But the Gods and Goddesses were not real. He is real.

ReplyDeleteIcarus, I like that you used a question to end your post! Thanks, guys this is the kind of posting i was hoping to return to! Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteCan we have myths about real people? (I think we can...) but if you agree, then say how. How are they mtyhs if they involve real people?
ReplyDeleteMS WANDER1 SAID:
ReplyDeleteI mean smart enough
i agree with Lee Brown. to learn and listen to there mistakes and there stories always have a lesson needed to be learned.
ReplyDeletei think its a bit in keeping people controled, scared, and not standing up for themselves kind of like being B littled
ReplyDeleteMSWANDERER1 SAID:
ReplyDeleteYes we can have myths about anyone we have imaginations too MS PELSTER
There are no myths today? Can you think of anything else that is a local myth or legend? Where do these come from? Why do we tell them? Repeat them?
ReplyDeletei think its becuase maybe somthing did happen like reall happened so they wantted to something to talk about...i dont really know
ReplyDeleteArtemis: I like that idea. So myths are sometimes based on things that happen that we cant understand.
ReplyDeleteCan anyone else give me an example of a myth that we might use to explain the unexplained?
i agree with icuras maybe they were religious people, so they made up storys about zeus to get everyones attention.
ReplyDelete@Ms.Hughes:they did that because they wanted people like us today to read about them and they was probably in the state of mind sayin people might not care about what we build or what we made,so they came up with people that were more inportant than them in will get more attention than them

ReplyDeleteUFOs amd cropcircles.. we can;t explain those so we just say a UFO created it
ReplyDeleteLIKE WHEN AMELIA AIR HART DISAPPERD SOME PEOPLE SAID SHE CRASHED OTHERS SAY SHE WAS EATEN BY SAVEGES
