What lasts?

There are many things that have proved to be lasting from the Ancient Greeks--democracy, art, philosophy, and education to name a few. Much of their society is reflected in our own. What do you think will last from our society? What things will people in the future have us, the people living today, to thank? Reality TV? The hot pocket?

If you were a god or goddess

If you were a god or goddess, what would you be the god or goddess of? What would be your powers? Would you, as the Greeks did, look down on human beings or would you be the kinder gentler god/goddess? What kinds of adventures do you think you would have?

Why Mythology?

Why do you think that they needed the stories of gods and godesses? Do we have myths of our own in our culture?

Zeus' Replacement

If we had a Zeus today, who would it be?

YOUR QUESTION...

Please post your blog question.

Written in the Stars

Complete this ONLY if you have finished blogging and commenting on the other blogs.

Have you ever had someone ask what your sign is? These "signs" or astrological symbols come from Greek Myths. What is your sign? Take a minute to do a little research (wikipedia will do just fine here)--what is the myth behind your sign?

Zeus' Behavior

Zeus is all powerful. He is the revered (respected) by all. Most women would love to have the opportunity to be with him. Why, then, do you think he chooses to trick them? And take them against their will?

A Day at the Zoo-Readings 3/4

What is the role of animals in Greek Mythology? We see several animals in the last two readings today. What kinds of animals do we see? What might they represent or symbolize?

Gods and Goddesses of Our Times

There are Gods and Goddesses abounding (leaping out) in Ancient Greek myths. Think about how Gods were viewed and who the Gods were. Who in OUR society has "God" or "Goddess" status? Who do we treat in the same way? Why do you think we do this?

Theseus and Dionysius

How are these two Gods similar in their apporaches to human beings? How are they different? What do these two stories show us about the relationships between Gods and mortals in Ancient Greece?

Everyone loves a good wander

In today's first reading, Theseus spends time wandering. Come to think of it, so does Dionysius. If we recall from yesterday, Hercules spend time wandering and all it seemed like Orion and Artemis did was roam around. Why do you think so many myths involve the idea of wandering (or walking around aimlessly)?

The Ten Labors

Many people do not think that Hercules punishment fit the crime. What do you think? Did he earn forgiveness? If you were assign a different punishment, what would you have him do?

Hercules! Hercules! (Hero or not?)

Hercules was not exactly the guy I always thought he was. What does this story say about the Ancient Greeks? He killed his entire family, is this guy a hero?? Be sure you explain what you think.

The Myth of Icarus

1. What do you think we are supposed to learn from Icarus?
2. Man, rough break for this kid. Did he deserve what he got?
3. Which character are you in this story? Why?

The Law of the (blog)Land

When we are blogging, there are a few things we need to remember. So, let's set some ground rules. I will make the first few general guidelines. Please comment and add any you think we need to employ (use).

1. Write only using the standard register--What do I mean? SMH. nt tht i dnt luv txting bt t tks me lngr to read t. As this is part of the class, it's ok for it to be conversational (in your voice!) but remember that what you say is public and shouldnt be anything you wouldnt say out loud.
2. Respond as often as you like. If mid-reading you get an idea in response to a post--write it up!
3. Stay on topic! The blog is for us to share about our reading and make connections. Be sure that you are answering the question asked, then you can ask other questions of the group!

Any more ideas? Rules we should stick by?

Good Morning!

Welcome to the Humanities Blog! Let's get started! Many writers use pennames or aliases when they write to ensure their privacy. We, too, will assume pennames. The only catch, I need to know what your pen name is so I can give you proper credit. Please respond to this posting with your student id (found on the sheet of paper) and an alias. Catch #2, the name must have something to do with this class. It can be a hero, god or goddess, a land, a battle. You choose.
